For the Visually-Impaired
Micro Medic Inc. first started its affiliation with the Base Supply Center
(BSC) Program in 1995 by providing the Lions Club Industries (LCI) in Durham, NC
with their first ever Point of Sale System…CounterPoint. Over these past nine
years working with numerous NIB Affiliated Agencies we have grown with each of
you and now have a greater appreciation for the difference you make in the lives
of those you serve.
Blind Industries & Services of Maryland approached us about developing an
Assistive Technology Tool that would lend itself to helping the blind workforce
in the BSC Program become more independent and expand work opportunities for
totally blind people.
We embarked on the mission to take the database that is being used at many of
the BSCs, and make it speech enabled. We took a little bit of all parts of our
company and married the technologies to come up with what we feel is a truly
unique product in today’s marketplace. By combining wireless networking, web
database design, text to speech conversion and voice recognition, we have
created a handheld device that can be used by totally blind individuals to do
inventories, product identification, price lookups, quantities on hand,
inventory locations, barcode printing, and receiving. It is not limited to these
functions, but these are the utilities requested by various agencies so far.
Perhaps the most important function of this product is to help expand the
availability of jobs that might have been previously unavailable to the blind
work force in the BSC Program. Additionally, it provides a tool where blind
people will have a greater sense of independence, job satisfaction and increased
self-esteem in knowing that they are able to be a very productive worker for
their employer.
